I've nearly finished putting together my short story compilation. And never one to do things the right way round, I've already painted the cover. It's not finished yet and I probably won't use it. But it gives me something to do when my creative juices are running dry.
I would be tempted to pick up a book with this cover, maybe you should consider using it.

Thanks. There are about a million gimp lessons on the net. A major source of inspiration for me has been Youtube. And the best part is that nobody has to see the rubbish that you paint, and I have painted an awful lot of pure rubbish.

I actually bought, with real money, Photoshop. It cost a fortune and in my opinion is very unfriendly with a learning curve that's more of a cliff. If anyone is learning and doesn't want to spend too much before they're ready, for me the only answer is Gimp. The fact that it's absolutely free helps quite a bit.
