Fame caught up with me - briefly

I called a garage today to arrange some work for my boss' car.
"What's the car, what's the problem, what's your name" he demanded in a bored monotone, so I told him.
"Wait a moment, Are you Roger Lawrence the author?
In that one moment twenty years of slaving over a computer and several hundred large notebooks fell away. This was it; I was famous. Heavenly choirs murmured joyfully about my head.
"But how did you know?" I asked, my natural scepticism already beginning to stir.
"Have you got a couple of motorbikes?
     "Yeeees, maybe."
"I used to work on reception of the motorbike shop you use."

In that instant all the joy spluttered away like water down a particularly cavernous toilet bowl.
"Yes I'm fine," I droned, arranging the work for the car.
The guy had stumbled upon my blog purely by accident a few years ago - and he didn't even buy a book.
Now I'm going to be depressed for the rest of the night and there's nothing anybody can do to stop me.
    So there!

  1. Come on Roger it's a start and surely better than my claim to fame as ‘that March Hare woman’ as called by the staff in my local post office! I bet they call me ‘that Mad March Hare woman’ behind my back! They don’t see much of me these days, so they probably assume I’m pushing up the daisies by now.
I’ve just started reading Progeney of Kongomato, will let you know how I get on, excellent so far. The problem is finding time to get down to some serious reading. I’m managing at most half a dozen pages a day just now. I’m busier than ever now I’m retired!

  2. I just hope you enjoy it - but not before bedtime.

  3. I'm still thinking this is a win. He recognized you as an author. I think it's funny when I visit schools and the teachers refer to me as a famous author. LOL Sure! ;)

  4. I'm going to savour it anyway. It might be the only time in my life that it happens. If I ever visited a school I'd probably be referred to as that annoying git we had here a long time ago.

  6. Well, at least he remembered you're an author. I'm still waiting for the day someone recognizes me.
